Ways to Support Us
The Health Sciences Centre Foundation relies on donations throughout the year to support the extraordinary healthcare at the Health Sciences Centre.
When you give, world-class researchers like Dr. Buchel gain the resources they require to continue with state-of-the-art surgery like breast reconstruction, and breast cancer patients in Manitoba receive the finest care and hope in the face of adversity.
Every donation makes an extraordinary difference and we welcome gifts of any size!

The History of Keeping Abreast
Jackie Stephen, founder of Keeping Abreast, was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2007. A few short weeks later, her mastectomy and reconstructive surgery were performed on the same day.
“My breast reconstruction surgery made the difference between ‘surviving’ and ‘thriving’ after breast cancer! I still look like me, feel like me, and can sometimes even forget I had cancer. This surgery is an extraordinary gift for women with breast cancer.”
Dr. Ethel MacIntosh and Dr. Ed Buchel performed Jackie’s mastectomy and immediate reconstruction surgery at the Health Sciences Centre and strive to do so for every woman with breast cancer in Manitoba who needs it.
The positive outcome and gratitude Jackie felt for everyone who supported her and her family throughout the ordeal led her, with the support of her husband Doug and close friends, to create Keeping Abreast. The Keeping Abreast mission is to offer hope, encouragement and support to breast cancer patients and survivors.
The first event in May 2007 was an overwhelming success, raising over $26,000 for CancerCare Manitoba and breast cancer research. The May 2008 event raised a phenomenal $100,000! That year, Keeping Abreast partnered with the Health Sciences Centre Foundation to raise funds specifically for breast cancer reconstruction surgery research & education.
Dr. Buchel and his team are have used the funds raised by Keeping Abreast to purchase computers for support staff and state-of-the-art surgical and monitoring equipment. This website, a badly needed resource for patients and their families, was also made possible through the funds raised by Keeping Abreast. Going forward, Keeping Abreast will continue to provide funding for Dr. Buchel and the Breast Reconstruction Program to further enhance the program for Manitoba woman with breast cancer.
