Dr. Thomas E.J. Hayakawa

Dr. Thomas Hayakawa has nearly 10 years’ experience as a plastic surgeon.  He completed his medical training at the University of Manitoba, then moved on to do two Fellowships, one in Reconstructive Microsurgery at Buncke Clinic in San Francisco and another in Facial Reconstructive Surgery at the Plastic Surgery Center of the Pacific in Honolulu.

In 2002, Dr. Hayakawa returned to Manitoba, as an Assistant Professor of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba.  He has been involved in developing the Breast Reconstruction Team since its inception in 2004.

Dr Hayakawa currently is actively involved in the development of a new infra red camera to detect blood flow in tissues. This collaboration with the National Research Council labs in Winnipeg will hopefully produce a camera to evaluate skin viability, especially on mastectomy skin flaps. This advance would dramatically improve the outcomes for all mastectomy patients. Of note, ongoing funds for this project is partially supported by the Keeping Abreast Fund.
